Title: World Egg

Medium: earthenware and stoneware ceramics

Dimentions: 14 x 8 cm (size varies)

Year of Creation: 2024

Project World Eggs in which the world we live in is born again from imaginary bird eggs. The story is an updated version of the first chapter in the Finnish national epos Kalevala. The epos is written in the 17th century by Elias Lönnrot, who collected the stories from the Karelian poem singing.

In the original story of Kalevala, the world was born from seven eggs, layed on the knee of a witch. Six of the eggs were golden and one was from iron. In the story the eggs shattered from the knee into the sea, giving birth to the Stars, the Sky, the Earth, and the Sun – the world we now live in.

In 2020 Alanko wanted to give a new perspective and spirit to the old traditional story – Instead of the world being born through destruction and breaking, the emphasis shifted towards unity and creation – dream about a better world being born in the time we live right now. The goal is to bring together numerous different elements, details, characters, and differences in appearance and color that each egg in this project symbolizes the important qualities of nature and humans, which is need so that a better world can be born.

The World Eggs collection currently boasts over 400 ceramic pieces, each with its own unique significance. Alanko has set a timeline for the project, with plans to conclude it by 2030, after which the creation of these symbolic eggs will cease.
