Robert Domażalski about Next

The concept of NEXT is a neologism of Radim Koros, which the artist understands as a random, uncontrolled unknown that appears in the electronic data flow as well as in the painting process in dialogue with the medium, and in life it is a manifestation of vitality in itself.

Koros’ newest canvases are the result of a specific synergy between man and machine. The painter allows a special algorithm to remix his paintings. It is impossible to predict what the result of program interference will be. The combination of of involved elements that seems chaotic at first glance often turns out to be a big surprise for the creator himself. The result of computer manipulation does not have to be graphic, because it can be generated in a raw form, i.e. a sequence of characters. The product of artificial intelligence is the starting point for further creative work. The visualizations of the remixes are generated in the form of graphic noise, based on the rectangular field module – Koros transfers, reinterprets and translates these segments into the structure of the painting. Creativity created in this way is an ideal exemplum of viractuality, a concept by Joseph Nechvatal presented in „Immersive Ideals / Critical Distances. A Study of the Affinity Between Artistic Ideologies Based in Virtual Reality and Previous Immersive Idioms”, according to which the interpenetration of real and virtual worlds is like this strong that a person ceases to notice the difference between them. Taken from the artist’s vocabulary, NEXT is a catch that brings out in viractuality the moment where AI seems to „think” and life „glitters”.

NEXT is an affirmation of progress and creating a positive vision of the world. Koros’ canvases pulsate with internal dynamics, are full of energy and unrestrained vigor; each of them is capable of being transformed, even if it has already been exhibited. The painting „Untitled Yet”, previously presented as part of the „Enlightenment” exhibition, and at the same time being the starting point for the construction of the new exhibition, has changed so far that it was awarded the title – „Captivating Freely”. Indeed, it captivates with its bright colors and subtlety of non-obvious shapes. NEXT manifestations draw attention to oneself; it’s hard to look away from them.

Koros’s painting is both a vision of the future and an archeology of ancient mythology. With „1984+” a figure deprived of will „stares” at us, and „Moloch” scares us with its incomprehensible complexity of repeating sequences of numbers among black planes.

The images are emotionally balanced by „Alex”, the angel-protector of people, and „Prometheus”, the supplier of progress, the savior who fought against tyranny. Koros, portraying the suffering titan, recalled the lesson of old masters such as Titian, Peter Paul Rubens and Gustave Moreau that artistic talent is the Promethean fire. In the context of the NEXT exhibition, „Prometheus” provokes the question of whether talent remains only a human domain. Since the program can suggest solutions that a professional painter deems good enough to be transferred onto a canvas, maybe artificial intelligence can also be considered talented

Koros’ artistic practice suggests that you should trust the machine, allow it to suggest the next step. Paradoxically, technology can motivate us to become better people. After all, reality is no more. It is „viractuality”. However, also in „viractuality” random information can appear, disruption of the system, which is a manifestation of life.

NEXT in Wrocław — text by Robert Domżalski

Each painting by Radim Koros is a cosmos. The constellations of the rickety flagella are intersected by rays of multicolored lights and strings of characters from foreign alphabets. Biomorphic garlands seem to want to become wires or a chip. It’s hard not to get the impression that a canvas like “Virtual Muse” is a portal to another dimension or a dream of a digital being that has become conscious.

The visions on each of the canvases are developed over the years. They are created without a prior plan. The artist’s hand is guided “into the unknown” by intuition and … a computer program. The Virtual Muse with its ancient predecessor is linked by mem- ory as an essential component of its nature. Before writing became popular, the an- cients had to be skilled in memorizing songs, which was preserved in a very name of the mother of the muses Mnemosyne, which means “memory”. Today, the number and speed of operations performed by the Virtual Muse is determined by the random access memory. The application used by Radim Koros creates remixes of reproductions of his paintings. After loading one, two or more image files, the software produces a new arrangement that relies heavily on deconstruction. The result of the transforma- tion is a stimulus for the painter, a kind of hint on how to continue painting. If certain effects seem attractive, the creator, engaging his sixth sense, will process the information further. The action can be repeated many times. Screenshots llustrates how the algorithm processed the photograph of the oil painting “Themis” during its production.

A machine and a person will carry out the creative task completely differently. The soft- ware will always operate within the rigid framework that the programmer will impose on it. It will, even if it is a self-improving algorithm. After all, artificial intelligence will always be poorer in emotions! Or is it? Radim Koros is convinced that a moment can be observed where AI seems to “think” and life is “glitching” – the artist coined the term “NEXT” to describe such a situation.

The NEXT is a random data that was created as a result of a disruption of the computer system, which allows us to see the manifestation of life in it. A similarly uncontrolled unknown may surprise the artist during a painting act in dialogue with the medium. The elusive nature of NEXT is an impulse that allows art to free itself from learned patterns; it is a divine inspiration, an affirmation of progress and creation a positive vision. It is not without reason that the exhibition “01001110 01000101 01011000 01010100” is complemented by “Huēhuecoyōtl”, who, mixing the fate of the Aztecs and their gods, consequently ran into trouble himself. The art of NEXT is to lose control.

The power of Koros’s art is the fact that it builds the viewer’s desire to “stare” at the picture and lose the sense of reality. We can return to the same work many times and still discover something in it that we have not noticed before. When we excitedly think that we have decoded Koros’ language and understand his grammar, another glance brings us down to earth.

The painting of Radim Koros is the Phaistos Disc.
