In the eighteenth century, ossuary chapels filled with intricate constructions of human bones became important landmarks on Europe’s penitential and artistic map. Places such as the Sedlec Ossuary in Kutn\u00e1 Hora and the Chapel of Skulls in Kudowa-Zdr\u00f3j, inscribed within the vanitas traditions of the era, served as reminders of the horrors of death, whilst clothing it in elaborate forms constructed from human remains. Oko\u0144ski’s ossuary likewise commemorates death, yet perceives it as an absurd and grotesque moment \u2014 one so passionately celebrated in Polish martyrological ritual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
