Despite the painterly qualities in the Austrian painter’s works, usually maintained in a muted tonality with pastels and shades of grey characteristic of his style, the presence of an expressive line is usually hard to miss. At times, it becomes almost graphic and brings to mind the comic book drawing, the illustration style of early Andy Warhol or, as the critics noted, the illustrator Raoul Dufy. Sometimes, to provide a contrast, he impetuously paints over the depicted figures, using yet another means of the painter’s workshop: expressive gesture.
