Title: Kukkilintu (Ptak przesilenia)

Medium: stoneware ceramics, candles

Dimentions: 23 x 22 x 23 cm

Year of Creation: 2025

The artwork Kukkilintu (Solstice Bird) is a spirit-object, made of stoneware ceramics, combining the shape of a bird with candlelight (fire). The hybrid is not only a sculpture – it presents a layer of action, as lighting the candles is part of the work. Their flames introduce the very element the solstice honors: the fragile but persistent re-emergence of light. When lit, they transform the sculpture into a ritual object. When the candles extinguish, the sculpture returns to its quiet, contemplative state, holding the memory of the light.

Kukkilintu is a central symbol of Karelian culture, and its name comes from the cuckoo bird. This migratory bird symbolizes both solstices – winter and summer: summer as a living creature singing across the landscapes, winter as a dream and a symbol of life and the renewal of the cycle returning to the darkness.
